INTERNATIONAL DIAMOND CENTER
Sarasota, FL

Join Katie Del Valle for a lively talk about a girl’s best friend … DIAMONDS!

In the meantime, here are some interesting facts about diamonds:

  • Mined diamonds from below the Earth’s outer crust are approximately 100 miles deep.
  • Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that diamonds were tears from gods.
  • Diamond is the only gem made from a single element: 99.95% carbon, the most commonly found element on Earth.
  • No one knows how long it takes diamonds to form underground as mined diamonds are ancient, most likely billions of years old.
  • It takes 725,000 pounds per square inch of pressure and a temperature of 2200 degrees Celsius to create a diamond.
  • The gemstones are brought to the Earth’s surface via very rare explosive kimberlite eruptions. The last eruption was between 10 to 25 million years ago.
  • Only 20% of all diamonds mined have a clarity appropriate for use as a gemstone.
  • The only piece of equipment that can cut through a diamond is another diamond.
  • Diamonds were being traded in India as early as the 4th century BC
  • A candle flame has about 1.5 million diamond nanoparticles.
  • You have the option of compressing your loved one’s ashes and turning them into an artificial diamond.
  • The first known use of the diamond as an engagement ring took place in 1477 where the bride’s name was spelled out in diamonds on the ring
  • Lab grown diamonds are structurally and chemically identical to mined ones. In 2018 the Federal Trade Commission revised its guides to eliminate any distinction between mined and lab diamonds.
