Sun Safety, Reduce Signs of Aging & More

Dr. David Sax from the Universty Park Dermatology & Medical Spa was the guest speaker at the May 11 general meeting of the LWRWC. Dr Sax is an expert in dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer. He opened his practice in Sarasota over 20 years ago.

In addition to medical dermatology, he and his team provide a wide range of premium cosmetic skin care services.

During his presentation, Dr. Sax first spoke about recognizing the different kinds of skin cancer and how each type of cancer can be treated. He dispelled the popular myths regarding exposure to the sun; the sun CAN damage the skin on a cloudy day and a base tan will NOT protect you from getting skin cancer.

The effects of sun exposure include aging of the skin, damage to eyes, cataracts, brown spots and freckles, and wrinkles. Tanning beds are just as dangerous as the sun.

He emphasized the importance of Self- examination and warned to look for spots or moles that are asymmetric, jagged borders, color variations, diameter, ever evolving.

Tips About Sun-safety
1. Avoid the sun between the hours of 10 AM-2 PM.
2. Wear sun protective clothes and broad brim hats.
3. Wear UV blocking sunglasses.
4. Use sunscreen generously, and
5. Avoid tanning beds

The second part of Dr. Sax’s presentation focused on reducing the signs of aging, removing fine lines, acne, scarring, brown spots, and wrinkles and he outlined four important steps.

1. Wear sunscreen, skin lightening creams and creams to repair damage
2. Superficial Chemical Peels and IV Peals to reduce brown spots, fine lines, and wrinkles
3. Hydro Facials; PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) the patient’s
own blood is used; Micrographic Surgery that can help skin and also with hair loss
4. CO2  Lasering- CO2.  These lasers treat sun damage, wrinkles, scars, warts, birthmarks, and other skin conditions.

Dr. Sax concluded with a brief discussion of techniques such as Body Sculpting, briefly explaining two types: Cool Sculpting and EMSculpting which uses electromagnetic pulsing.

Following his enlightening presentations, Dr. Sax answered questions from the audience and gave a gift to all members in attendance.
