LWRWC Beats the Summer
Broadway Shows, Tropical Cruise, and Fancy Lunch
A large contingency of Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club (LWRWC) members, husbands, family, and friends, enjoyed a delightful performance of ‘Tops from Flops;” at the Player’s Centre for Performing Arts on Thursday, July 19, 2018 in Sarasota . This wonderful musical extravaganza wove an ingenious tapestry of 75 years of timeless and treasured Broadway songs that rose from the ashes of some of Broadways biggest bombs.
Most of the crowd was familiar with the fabulous songs and for many of them it was a trip down memory lane. Songs such as “Just One of Those Things’, ‘Give My Regards to Broadway,” ‘Yankee Doodle Dandee”, “A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody,” “I’ve Got A Crush on You”, “Get Happy”, an Al Jolson Medley of “Tootsie”, “Swanee” and “California Here I Come”, “Summertime”, ‘Sunny Side of the Street”, “Bewitched”, “Begin the Beguine”, Come Rain or Come Shine”, “Strike Up the Band”, and so much more. The surprise is that these beloved songs came from some of Broadway’s biggest fiascoes. All these shows were huge flops, but the songs are enduring all-time hits from composers such as George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter.
Tops from Flops is the brainchild of Player’s Theatre performer, Riselle Bain, who originally wrote it as a project for the yearly Opera/Musical Theatre Workshop at Stetson University where she majors in music. Riselle researched the all-time great American hits that came from some of Broadways biggest critical and financial failures. She is thrilled to see her creation brought to life and to be one of the performers.
The event, which was Co-Chaired by Monika Templeman and Kathleen Cleveland, is part of a series of outings “off the ranch” planned by the 2018 program committee.
