Polo/Picnic/Potluck Warmed by Friendship
On Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, a group of Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club members, family, and friends, gathered in a covered cabana on the south side of the Sarasota Polo Club to share a Picnic/Potluck feast catered by members and guests before watching an exciting Polo Match.
In spite of the chilly weather, attendees enjoyed the warmth of friendship and delectable dishes and desserts. The event began with the Player Parade onto the field led by a horse drawn coach carrying our national flag and a moving rendition of the national anthem.
Polo is the fastest game on four feet, and everyone watched with rapt attention as the horses and riders sped in every direction trying to make that elusive goal. Once known as “The Sport of Kings,” polo has evolved into the sport of Kings and Queens and the matches played at the Sarasota Polo Club are now co-ed.
Attendees also enjoyed the half-time entertainment, and many chose to participate in the unique tradition of divot stomping. Half-time was a special treat for children who had the opportunity to ride in a big horse- drawn farm wagon.
The weather was extremely cold and blustery, but the warmth of friendship, the fun of getting together, and the strong sense of community ensured that a good time was had by all. Sharon Wright, LWRWC Program Co-Chair, served as the event organizer, for this “ Off-The-Ranch” Outing!
