May 2020 Update

TO OUR WONDERFUL MEMBERS OF THE LWRWC

It is hard to believe that it has been close to two months since we were all told to “shelter in place!” This disruption has been difficult for everyone. There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel as we go through the stages of opening up again. At this point, because so many things are still up in the air, we have decided to cancel all events through the end of the summer. We are HOPING that we can start up again in September with our very popular Pot Luck dinner.

The board has continued to meet and we would like to share with you what we have been working on.

We have 16 fabulous women who have been sewing masks. They have become affectionately as the “LWRWC Sewing Angels.” 450 masks were delivered to the LWR Medical Center and another 450 delivered or will be delivered to our adopted charities HOPE, SMART, SOLVE, and The Children’s Guardian Fund. Masks have been brought to Home Health Care and to several doctor’s offices in the area and more masks are being sewn for merchants and restaurants on Main Street in LWR and San Marco Plaza.

· An events committee has been created to look at and evaluate past events, suggest changes and ways events could be improved, suggest new events, investigate possible venues, and recruit chairs and co-chairs. A survey was drafted and sent out to members earlier this month. The board wanted to get an idea of what kind of events members would be interested in attending. The Holiday Market, the Book Luncheon, and the Fashion Show ranked at the top. Girl’s Night Out, Game Day, The Holiday Dinner, and Brunch, Bingo, & Bags were also very popular. We are always looking for members to join committees for these events and help to make them a huge success. If you are interested in joining a specific committee, please let Cheryl Breining know by sending her an email at cbrein52@gmail.com.

We are happy to report that each of our adopted charities received a mid-year distribution of $2000! Each was so grateful to receive these much-needed funds during these very difficult times. The Scholarship Committee met on March 9 and selected LWRHS Senior Manoela Dos Santos as our $1,000 recipient. $250 Scholarships were also awarded to Tayla Rosenthal and Morgan Kirchman. Our plan was to present both “big” and regular checks at the April meeting, however, due to the pandemic, checks were mailed with a congratulatory letter. Their pictures and stories can be found on our website.

We have a new FACEBOOK page!!! You can see updates, pictures, and keep up with members and friends by going to LWRWC Group. The site is private so you will have to send a request to join. We check for new requests daily.
