April Meeting Featured “Great Summer Reads”
The LWR Women’s Club Monthly Meeting was held on THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013 at the LWR Town Hall on LWR blvd.
The business meeting was called to order by president, Mary Beth Steffens, and included a treasurer’s report with detailed figures on the Spring fashion show [$6,290 profit], a membership report [199 current members], updates on the Asolo Tour, Spanish Point trip, Ball Game, Fall bazaar, and Holiday dinner.
Diane Shaw, program chair, introduced the speaker for the evening, Georgia Court, owner of Bookstore 1 in Sarasota.
Georgia’s love of words and her career in words has been life-long. After graduating from college in the early 70’s she worked for IBM. Seven years later, the realization she preferred to think about sentence construction more than about the construction of computer systems led to her earning her master’s degree in journalism.
Georgia worked as a marketing director at a PBS station in Cincinnati; ran her own PR-events company; wrote a book about event planning; published a newspaper for healthcare professionals; wrote a column on healthcare and a novel for middle-grade readers; taught English composition at the University of Cincinnati. Then she retired. Almost!
After moving to Sarasota her favorite downtown bookstore closed. A year of complaining about the closing led to the realization the only way she would have a bookstore was if she did it herself . . . And Bookstore Number 1 was born.
Georgia and Elsie Souza presented a wonderful selection of books for the members to enjoy over the summer.
The titles ranged from poetry, fiction, memoirs, and even cookbooks. The carefully chosen books selected reflected their love of reading and appreciation for beautiful prose. Many of the authors mentioned would be ones whose body of work should be worth further exploration.

The next General Meeting will be held on October 10, 2013; the speaker will be Kim Cool, a Sarasota author… about ghosts! Watch for summer emails about some possible summer gatherings and WC will host a LeBarge cruise on Sarasota Bay on September 12.
