Annual Meeting 2013

LWRWC Begins Exciting Year

The Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club met on January 10, 2013 at the LWR Town Hall for their Annual Business Meeting. After a short “meet and greet” while members socialized with old and new friends, snacked on sweets, and paid their dues, the meeting was called to order by president, Mary Beth Steffens.

The main order of business was the presentation of checks to the charities supported by the Women’s Club during the past year. Checks totaling $28,000 [$7,000 to each charity] were awarded to SMART, SOLVE, Hope Family Services, and Meals on Wheels. The checks were presented by chairs of the major fund raisers held by the WC during 2012.

Guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Paul Blackketter, Project Manager for Benderson Development and Chief Operating Officer for the Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Association.

Recently he was in charge of turning the 600-acre park into a world-class rowing and regatta facility. During the process of traveling extensively to study the industry he became a global expert on the cottage industry of regattas and rowing. The facility is currently in use and has already had a beneficial economic impact on our area. Plans are in place to qualify the site as a world-class rowing facility.

In October Benderson Development broke ground on the Mall at University Town Center which will house approximately 115 stores and be anchored by Saks, Macy’s and Dillard’s. The mall is scheduled to open on October 14, 2014. Mr. Blackketter spoke to the club about all of these developments.
