LWRWC Gets Scoop on Mote Aquarium

Dan Bebak, Vice President of Aquarium, Education and Outreach, was the featured speaker at the LWRWC February General Meeting at LWR Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019.
In his dynamic presentation, Dan shared an up close and personal look at Mote Marine Laboratory’s exciting plans to relocate to a new world class aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park by 2022. The new futuristic looking building will be on a strip of land between the Nathan Benderson rowing facility Finish Tower and the University Town Center mall.

Construction costs are estimated at $130 million. Dan explained that the iconic landmark structure will be home to a cutting-edge aquarium and research facility that will specialize in innovative science research and education. Dan told the club members that at the new Mote Science Education Aquarium, “science is the attraction.”

According to Dan, the spectacular new 110,000-square-foot Mote Science Aquarium will embody the Mote’s vision of Oceans for All, doubling the number of visitors whose lives are enriched by marine science each year, and providing no-cost opportunities for schools to utilize specialized teaching labs to ensure that every child has the opportunity for hands-on marine science and technology experiences.

The plan includes learning laboratories that will host students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as immersive opportunities that can be experienced by aquarium visitors of all ages, such as on-site diving opportunities, marine research and scientific demonstrations for the ultimate science experience. Mote’s longstanding history of scientific excellence and effective utilization of science for public benefit, will be greatly enhanced at the new Mote Science Education Aquarium.
