The LWRWC was are very fortunate to have Rex Jensen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch as the speaker at its March meeting. Mr. Jensen spoke for over an hour to a very attentive audience.
His extremely informative presentation focused on the history of Lakewood Ranch – originally owned by the Uihlein Family from Wisconsin, owners of the Schlitz Brewing Company, where LWR has been, and what the future holds for us.
In 1984, there was nothing more than mining and agriculture east of I 75. LWR began with the Polo Club and it’s first community, Summerfield Village. SMR actively sought out builders who were interested in building entire communities, not just one house at a time. Today, there are over 30,000 residents as well as over four square miles of non-residential space, a hospital, business and shopping opportunities, schools, and entertainment. It is the 3rd fasted selling community in the United States! SMR’s plans and vision are always evolving and they are always looking ahead.
LWR is a fully integrated, master-planned community that has been ranked among the top ten fastest selling communities in the United States from 2011 through 2017, a remarkable statistic but no surprise to those of us who live here.
Thanks to Mr. Jensen, a pro-active leader known for setting the entitlement, green building, transactional and financial framework for Lakewood Ranch, as well as a number of public and private partnerships with school boards, local, regional, and state governments, and innovative business approaches to difficult private and public sector issues, the community has risen to the top as a highly desirable place to live.
