Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club Donates $30,000

On Wednesday, January 11th, 2017, the Lakewood Ranch Women’s held its Annual Business Meeting at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. The Women’s Club presented checks totaling $27,000 to their three adopted charities: SMART, HOPE, and SOLVE.

Checks for $9,000 each were presented to Laurel Lynch, Executive Director of HOPE Family Services (an organization that works with families to prevent domestic violence); Peggy Kerwin, Executive Director of SOLVE Maternity Homes (which has been assisting pregnant women for over 40 years), and Brandi Ezell, of SMART (Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy that provides therapy for disabled and traumatized children and adults.)

This cash contribution, along with “In-kind” donations in 2016, totaled over $30,000 in donations from the Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club.

Successful fundraising efforts throughout 2016 included the a fashion show in November, “A Passion for Fashion”, the “Mistletoe Market Luncheon” held in December, and “LWRWC Speaker Series Charity Fundraiser Luncheon” held in March 2016.

Keynote Speaker

Jeff LaHurd offers first champagne toast to LWR Women’s Club Birthday Celebration

Trish Newman, 2017 Program Director introduced Keynote Speaker, Jeff LaHurd.

Jeff has written 15 books about the history of the community as well as numerous articles for the Herald Tribune, Sarasota Magazine, and The Downtowner. He has lived in Sarasota since 1950 and has won numerous awards.

In 1992, Jeff produced a video that was shown on the History Channel and was awarded Outstanding Contribution to Preservation in the Field of Communication from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation.

During his 45 minute presentation, the women were treated to stories, slides, and anecdotes about Sarasota and 10 of the most inspiring Women who helped to shape Sarasota.


20th Birthday Champagne Toast

Monika recognized the Past Presidents and asked those in attendance to stand, state their names and the year that they were president.

At the close of the evening, members were treated to champagne and birthday cake in honor of the 20th birthday of the Lakewood Ranch Womwn’s Club.

The 2016 Women of the Year Awards were presented to Jan Hasler and MaryLee Danahy.   Monika thanked both these amazing women for their incredible contributions above and beyond the call of duty to the Women’s Club.   Monika referred to them as  “unsung heroes!”  Engraved Vera Wang vases were presented to each.

President Monika Templeton reminded the members, “Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club organization truly exemplifies fun, friendship and community service . It is a wonderful gift to the community to be able to donate to these amazing organizations. None of this would be possible without the support of the women in Lakewood Ranch”.
