LWRWC Visits the Chihuly Collection in St. Petersburg
On Friday, June 16, 2017, Lakewood Ranch Women’s Club members, husbands and guests, took a memorable trip to ST Petersburg to visit the beautiful Chihuly Museum. The museuum houses a stunning, permanent collection of world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly’s unique glass creations.
The museum building is designed to ensure that the art and architecture work together to create a phantasmagorical display. Chihuly’s pieces are showcased with low-lighting, dark spaces and neutral backgrounds to create beautiful rainbow-like shadows on the walls and enhance the vibrant colors of the glass.
An iconic 20 foot sculpture created especially for the site is at the entrance to this nature inspired Collection. As one ventures inside, one is encountered by many brilliant, towering shapes and colors that created the illusion of wandering in an alien galaxy that dazzled the senses.
The Collection includes Chihuly’s spectacular large-scale pieces such as Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier created specifically for the Collection along with several popular series works including Macchia, Ikebana, Niijima Floats, Persians and Tumbleweeds which have delighted art fans around the world.
The group enjoyed viewing the amazing pieces on display and watching a fascinating Chihuly documentary in the “movie room”. Afterwards, they headed to The Morean Glass Studio across the street as the tour also included a glass blowing demonstration in the Morean Hot Shop. The fascinating demonstration of how a glass creation is made included detailed instructions and very interesting explanations of the complex process.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent having lunch with friends and family and exploring the delightful shops in waterfront area of lovely St Petersburg. Some also took the opportunity to visit Mazzaro’s Italian Market for authentic Italian cuisine and delectable treats.
